LinguaFolio

LinguaFolio® is a proficiency-based, learner-centered, formative assessment tool that:
● empowers learners to manage their own language learning,
● provides a place for learners to collect evidence showing their growth, and
● facilitates language learning in and outside classroom.

LinguaFolio®, developed by members of the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL), is based on the European Language Portfolio (ELP) and the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements. The Can-Do statements are organized according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency levels and sublevels. LinguaFolio® relates to proficiency scales from other organizations, such as the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) and the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

TELL ProjectThe Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Project, an initiative of AdvanceLearning, is a collection of products and processes that can be used to enhance the effectiveness of world language teachers. TELL, which emanates from an understanding that student achievement is influenced more by an effective teacher than any other factor, attempts to synthesize work from the general education arena regarding those things that effective teachers do and make that information specific to the work of language teachers. The heart of the TELL Project is the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning Framework, which is supported by a variety of tools and resources.

a4eslBilingual Vocabulary Quizzes: These quizzes are newly generated by the Internet TESL Journal's computer program from a list bilingual equivalents each time the quiz is taken. The program randomly chooses one word from the target language and randomly chooses one of the five choice locations to put the other language's equivalent. The remaining four choices are filled in randomly from other words on the list. Students can review the same vocabulary over and over without becoming bored since each time a quiz is taken the questions will be different.

A very important part of planning for face-to-face or digital instruction is to clearly have in mind the structure of your classroom.  You may have a great lesson but if the right structures are not in place, it may not yield to the results you expect.  Maintaining active student engagement and building positive relationships with students are key to manage your classroom, but you need to have structures in place that will allow you to build those relationships and implement engaging instructional practices.

Classroom structures and practices may include norms, routines, expectations, and classroom resources among others.  No matter whether you are teaching elementary, middle, high, or college level, having a plan and being consistent on it will help you to have a more successful and rewarding teaching experience.

As we debate the possibility and for some the certainty that we will start our 2021 school year online, having this online structure defined is even more important.  This is a new territory for students and teachers and as the leader of the classroom, the students are counting on you to create a safe and supporting learning environment.

The Classroom Structures resource below provides a template for educators to consider areas of their classroom structures and procedures they have in place on a face-to-face classroom, and how these may help determine how they will implement (or not) these structures in a digital environment.
