Spanish in Texas

"The purpose of the Spanish in Texas project is to profile Spanish as it is spoken throughout Texas today and to provide open learning tools that allow students, teachers, and the general public to explore Spanish language variation. A central goal of the project is to encourage users to view local varieties of Spanish and their speakers as important resources for learning about language and culture.

Spanish in Texas is part of the 2010-2014 program of the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL), a National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Texas at Austin." Source:

Língua da Gente, our series of audio podcast lessons that are produced at the University of Texas at Austin, with tremendous support from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the College of Liberal Arts, and COERLL, (The Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning). In Brazil, the term língua da gente (literally ‘language of the people’) refers to the way that people actually talk in everyday speech.  And that, in essence, is the object behind this series. Each audio podcast, generally between 8-12 minutes, includes the presentation of a brief dialog, a line-by-line English translation, and more in-depth analysis of the pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and cultural content in the lesson.  Discussion blogs also accompany each lesson, providing community interaction for comments and questions.  In broad terms, the lessons are subdivided into three levels of difficulty: Beginning, Elementary, and Intermediate.

Spanish Proficiency Exercises

"Spanish Proficiency Exercises is a compilation of brief video clips in which native speakers of Spanish from various locations throughout Latin America and Spain demonstrate various language tasks. The objective of the exercises is to provide students of Spanish with the necessary tools to be able to talk about the same topics in Spanish. In order to do, this Spanish Proficiency Exercises contains five major components. First, there is a simplified video clip. This simplified version is scripted, the native speakers talks slower, and he or she uses simpler words and less slang. Second, there are video clips of native speakers who also perform the proficiency tasks. These clips are not scripted. What the native speakers say is what they really said. Some may talk fast, others talk slow, and some have specific regional dialects."
